Sometimes in our solemn and shapeshifting sorrows, in moments and phases that feel like epochs of deepest despair, we are given a ray of sunshine to take us beyond our selves in the care of another living and sentient creature. ‘DC’ was hatched in the incubator at the farm in Virginia and imprinted on me within less than twenty four hours of arriving into the waking world. It is not unreasonable to claim that this baby DuCk very well saved my life. It is certain to say that she placed hope into a heart in which there was a vacancy for it.
