Waking, pre-dawn, in a thinly veiled tent along the Salkantay Trail in Peru, on the trek to ancient Incan cities in the Andes, boiling water in a kettle over an open fire, using a steel mug rinsed in the nearby stream, and a jagged rock with a single flat side as a table, allowing the coca leaf tea and raw cane sugar to open my eyes as the sun gets out of bed. This is where you’ll find me in my dreams. If in your lucid state of being you encounter me, I will happily shake your hand, give you a warm hug (although I have since given this jacket as a gift to a dear friend @jesseyrichards )and share my poems with you. May we trek together eating wild papaya and laughing in the pre-dawn moments of existence. Life is beautiful.

In collaboration and study with my fellow castmates for the upcoming production of ‘The Crucible’ @brukatheatre ,
there was discussion of the emphasis placed upon submission in the Bible. This flowing and uplifting conversation naturally led to the verse in chapter 5 of Ephesians that, I believe, far too many men focus on with authoritarian rigidity and a toxic level of domineering masculinity.

I believe too many men narrowly focus on verse 22… “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.” and far too few men in today’s world pay any heed to verse 25… “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
.
It is atleast this man’s opinion that I should not be demanding love everywhere I go. I should be, and constantly become, of a manner that is worthy of respect, and trust that love will come as it will according to its own agenda and timing. The best relationships are held in the idea of two individuals submitting to each other in mutual love and mutual respect. That, I believe, should be the take away message if we expositionally approach the chapter and book as a whole.

I for one would die for my wife. I would give up everything I have, unto death, for my beloved and I am completely unashamed to say so. That is where true faith enters in through the door, that our ego leaves barely cracked open, and changes everything.

I am so grateful for her and my cast/crew mates who teach me daily.

We have summits that we achieve in life such as mountaintops, but the point is to acknowledge that the work is never done. We do not arrive at a summit in a relationship. We work beside each other in love and respect for all of our days.

I can never truly and completely know what it is like to be someone else. Even if I have shared many meals and years of my life in very close proximity, there will always be some sort of distinction between the one I perceive them to be, and who they really are. However, like perfection, though I cannot attain it, I should desire to spend my days getting as close as I possibly can.
