In observation of the sun, we find we must deal effectively with the shadows that are cast. Relishing the light across time from a fixed point does not mean dwelling in a darkened past. So the dials are turned to the points we admire, and the heart tuned to what will last. And the battle between light and dark wages on across the universe in its vast expanse.

Just as the first buds of newfound life struggle to flourish, and spring into action amidst the extinction burst of a harsh and unforgiving winter, so we too reach for hope. We reach for love. We reach out to the great artist for the sense of dynasty and purpose that we long for. We attempt to absorb the light we are given through the shifting of clocks and the radiance of what has been written on our hearts. We speak to the sky “please take me”, and we whisper to ourselves “not yet” for the sake of coming full circle to the point of no return. To the point of absolute surrender to the decadence and brokenness of life. To the point of bearing each other’s burdens in love, so that when winter returns, we may have already run our course and presented the canvas of earth with an undeniable beauty and requisite opportunity. For we now know that every single moment in our life is an opportunity to take part in eternity as we close our eyes, breathe deeply, and smile…

As we scroll through life, doing this tap dance on our phones, let us remember what lessens the strife, and helps us feel less alone. It is the number of likes, nor each follow for unfollow, it’s what’s demonstrated on the open mics which leave us a bit less hollow. It’s the sense of deep, rich, meaningful connection, of true relationship, and sharing voice, that sense that somehow together we’re headed in the same direction, and that happiness can be a personal choice.

We are joined and designed at the hip and the heart with every creature that creeps, and as the connection becomes better defined, the enemy of our souls never sleeps. But the artist that painted the world tends the garden, knows we’re intertwined, and every promise made she keeps.
So, we continue to climb to the tops of the towers we’ve made,
looking down on his creation below. For we’ve no idea how long our episode will be played, we’re merely ecstatic to watch the show.

I remember all those years back when I first visited the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I was fascinated by the breathtaking rock formations, and was specifically intrigued by the one referred to in the guide book as the “Siamese Twins”. After touring around for quite a while, frustrated for not having found the apple of my eye, I decided to climb up on top of a nearby formation for a bird’s eye view. I sat there for a while, soaking in the majesty and the grandeur of the expanse. It was only after returning to Denver (my home at the time) and getting the film in the disposable camera developed, that I was able to smile and have a good laugh. In looking out for the ‘Twins’, I had unwittingly climbed atop one of them. This snap from 2002 is of me meditating in a seated position on top of one of her towers.

Everyone is either heading into the desert, heading out of the desert, or in it. The duration of each stage is directly effected by the marriage of our intention and our response to the results of others. May we learn from our time in the wilderness without being forever lost. May our good intentions produce good results. May others good results produce our good intentions, and may we forever grow from them, through them, and in them.
