We spend our entire lives
hiding
from the fact that we
are going to die.
Yet we spend our entire lives
just wanting
to get through it
without really knowing why.
Somewhere in the middle
life meets
with its own agenda
and its own plans.
It’s a wonder anyone survives.
It’s a miracle anyone understands.
We look out on the horizon
that is the new year,
hoping we will wisen
and we will have more reason
for cheer
We’re here in this now
looking through the lens
of perception,
trying to make guesses
at the future and the
next best direction.
Our crystal ball
doesn’t always see all
of the clarity
amidst messes and disparity
in our fits
and our transgressions.
But, we can meet that vision halfway
by seeking as we should seek,
minute by unforgiving minute, hour by powerful hour, and week by working week.

This soft landing we are seeking as we plunge headlong into life will only come with time. Once the diving in becomes customary, and the complete immersion becomes habitual, the landing will feel more like going home (if going home is a good thing). The fibers of your being will begin to develop their own formula for reaching out. They will memorize the character of the leap itself, and incorporate the dreams into every decision which is an attempt at flight.

Having gone to bed with a personal sense of accomplishment for staying up until 9pm in the pacific time zone (midnight in NYC), the consequence is rising again shortly after midnight in my own zone. I can think of no better way to ring in the darkest hour of the day than with meditation and poetry. Here’s to filling this world with beauty and verse and helping each other along the way. May the words that matter most find their way to us across all of the three to four am’s of our lives.
