I remember when I first brought you home. We shared a glass of water and a comfortable silence. I explained the story of each rock and gem I laid before you. The kitchen seemed to be your favorite room at the apartment with vaulted ceilings across from the tiny art gallery and the duck pin bowling place in Mt. Jackson. I remember how regal you looked in the moonlight in the seedling room of the greenhouse in Quicksburg. I remember how badly sunburned you got passing through the fields of sunflowers in Nebraska, and how worried I was that I might have lost you by the time we were leaving Utah. You came back to life in the high desert of Nevada. So did I.

Perhaps it was the exact timing of each post and the power of resonance with viewers. Perhaps it was the exact timing of each post and the power of relevance with the world at large. Perhaps it was the specific content. Perhaps there are too many variables for any one sentient creature to figure out a formula. Whatever the reasons, the calendar gives us permission to assess the year in review. May I continue to find simple verse for complicated times, complicated verse for simple times, and pictures that are worth all of the words.

Working mandatory overtime hours, doing my part to be a cog in the machine, grievingly supporting the rampant consumerism as best I can, reluctantly elevating the corporatism as much as one human being can as it has long since replaced capitalism as our market economy. Feeling sick. Feeling injured. Feeling hopeless and feeling tired. Then like a beacon amidst the dreary days and nights which seem to have no end, riding in on the coattails of hot chocolate and Christmas music playing through the car speakers. The portal of discovery came through hidden valley. I discovered that, if the circumstances are right, with my best friend at my side, I can indeed feel like a kid again. Santa even gave me a candy cane. The spirit is still there, waiting to be uncovered and revealed.
