It is night now, as it usually is about this time, and I’m sitting across from your favorite chair. What was your favorite chair. In my mind it is still yours. I never thought of you as being sick. I never thought of you as frail or weak in any way. You’d read to me from those epic stories that were intended to build young boys and girls into heroes, but I’d also imagine the lead character with your sense of humor, and the same scratch on the left side of your glasses. You were old enough to remember what it meant to make a promise, and young enough to still dream. You were strong enough to build your own home, and humble enough to imbue it with love. My memories will change a little bit over time, but they will always remain with me. When I can’t sleep I curl up in your chair, next to the memory I cling to, and I count the threads on the tassels of your blanket until I can at least close my eyes. You are with me always.

When the trials come,
and the hearings start,
Let me remain silent when I am taken.
Not one word to pass my lips,
no signal given by my eyes.
Let my heart remain still,
focusing on children’s laughter and the droplets which cling to blades of grass, desperate to reflect the sunrise.
Let love overwhelm me.
Let peace permeate my being. Let understanding flourish, when I am taken. This will not be a matter of right or wrong, but merely a matter of illusory power and control. It will be what it will be. Let me be with it as one, when I am taken.

In a distant kingdom, there is laughter during the feast that echoes through the hallway. In a distant land there are decisions being made behind walls that will stretch well beyond their confines. The King makes the decision to laugh, expectant that others will share in the merriment, in order to keep their heads from rolling. The court jester however, he dreams of the bridge, far off from the kingdom, where it appears silent, and at peace.

We are all in the waiting room, waiting for our number to be called. We distract from the sense of impending doom, by focusing on others and hoping they are stalled. Some focus on their dress or their groom, while others simply stare at the wall. Anything at all not to focus on the tomb, and what ought to come after the fall. For we didn’t simply originate with a big boom, we came to be because of a call.
