If you sit closely beside them, you can almost hear them breathing. You can almost hear them weeping for the destruction elsewhere. If you sit closely beside them you can almost hear their heartbeat. You can almost hear their laughter when someone slips. If you sit closely beside them, you begin to lose sight of where they end and where you begin. You can almost see the looks on their faces when it starts to rain. Such joy and such presence is palpable if you would only sit closely enough beside them.

In our need to feed our bodies and rest our weary bones we are not alone. We take catnaps (or dog naps as it were) and siestas. We lay on the coolest part of the lawn, beneath the shade tree, during the hottest part of the day. We may or may not drift away, but we play with the idea in our slumbering mind, eyes closed, otherwise blind to worries for those brief moments. May you each get the rest you so desire and need. I love you.

We hobble down hallways

losing heart by the hour,

Hoping the hallowed will always

honor us with their power.

Never outside of this pattern of thought,

always within,

Dwelling in the battles we’ve fought,

yet in these hallways we begin.

For when we walk toward the pain,

rather than distract ourselves

or walk away,

we embrace the chance to heal the strain,

and perhaps fight for one more day.

The wounds of this body may not be healed,

Neither those of mine, nor those of yours,

For we hobble down hallways gaining heart,

as truth is revealed by opening doors.
