They and Them

I keep hearing they and them
as if we wouldn’t have bled the same way back when we might have cut ourselves in the playpen.
Let me tell about the only they and them that I have seen and known. They who have cleaned tables, swept floors, and served hot meals. Them who have emptied garbages, planted crops, and worked beneath cars. They who have shaped minds through lessons taught, vacuumed hotel room floors, and cleaned toilets. They who have volunteered. Them who have tried to raise children on a single minimum wage and no hope but each other. They who have been willing to give their precious and unique lives defending and protecting. Them who have lived paycheck to paycheck with no benefits or appreciation for years. They who have picked crops under the scorching sun, baled hay, and washed dishes. To the healers, counselors, and teachers of this world. To my they and them. I love you.

About SIDEWAYS EIGHT
