My predictions have come true
again and again
in a worldly sense,
with humanitarian appeal,
sheltered from watchful doubting eyes
determined to pick up patterns
and tells in order to
maximize the drop
at the end of the evening.
This skill set applied evenly
across the green felt plains
of the Wild West
would land me in jail
or, worse yet,
in the trunk of a stranger’s car
on the outskirts of town,
far from the twinkling neon,
beyond the stale ashtray smell
outside pawn shops which
never look open from the outside,
but always are when you
check the door.
Like opportunity
and most people’s hearts.
